Difference between “Bamboo” and “Sasa”

There are about 670 types of bamboos in Japan. “Sasa”, also known as broad leaf bamboo, has at most one branch per node. Shinodake, Nemakaridake, Suzudake and Ryuukyuuchiku are classified as Sasa. “Take”, usually bark of bamboo comes off after growing up, is larger than Sasa. Madake, Mousouchiku and Hachiku are classified as “Take”. Houraichiku, classified as tropical bamboo, is one of the few bamboo species in Japan. As making bamboo products, it is very important to have an eye for good bamboo.

Importance of bamboo materials

As making bamboo products, making bamboo material is the most important process. Making bamboo material starts from cultivating bamboo. In order to raise high quality bamboo trees, forest management is necessary. It takes about 3 to 5 years for bamboo to reach full size. Until cutting off, managing bamboo forest continues every day.
